Some of the bills that are introduced on Smith Hill leave you scratching your head. Many times lawmakers will introduce bills just to satisfy their constituents knowing they don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of passing such as former Rep Peter Palumbo looking to make it illegal to drive while having a dog in your lap. I doubt Representative Anastasia Williams' proposal is made with the same folly. Williams' bill reads "whenever a judge from the superior court, family court, district court, traffic tribunal, workers' compensation court or municipal court who is a person of color leaves the bench, for whatever reason, their replacement must be a person of color, so as not to diminish the number of judges of color in that court. At the risk of irritating minorities, I'll ask a simple question. Should these vacancies be filled on merit and not color?
