(Providence, RI) -- The price tag of fixing Rhode Island's troubled new online benefit access system is increasing. The Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services says the total cost for the completion of the Unified Health Infrastructure project, or UHIP, is now expected to reach 648-million dollars by 2020, up almost 150-million dollars from the previous estimate. The state would be on the hook for about 30-million dollars more, while the federal government would pick up the rest of the tab. UHIP launched in 2016 despite warnings from federal officials that it wasn't ready, but Health and Human Services Secretary Eric Beane says considerable progress has been made since then.
