Several NFL players protested while the national anthem was played during early NFL preseason games yesterday (August 9th). Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and cornerback De’Vante Bausby raised their fists during the anthem, and defensive end Chris Long put his arm around Jenkins’ shoulder. Defensive end Michael Bennett walked out of the tunnel during the anthem and walked toward the bench while it played. In another game, Miami Dolphins receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson kneeled behind teammates lined up for the anthem, and defensive end Robert Quinn stood and raised his right fist. In a game in Seattle, three players went into the locker room before the anthem was played. The NFL and the players’ union are still working on a policy about the anthem, after the league initially ordered everyone to stand on the sideline when it is played, or remain in the locker room. The NFL has failed miserably not having the testicular fortitude to stop this stuff. NFL TV ratings were significantly down last season and these protests were part of the reason...but these players continue to bite the hand that feeds them.
