(Newport, RI) -- The Newport Pell Bridge was closed in both directions for some time due to a vehicle fire in the westbound lanes on Monday. Rhode Island State Police reports indicate a woman was driving on the bridge at around 3 p.m. when she noticed smoke coming from her car and when she pulled over, she saw flames coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle. The woman was not injured; the car was destroyed by the time authorities arrived. Police say there was no structural damage to the bridge.
