Medical Marijuana Treatment Allowed For Autism

(Providence, RI)  --  The Rhode Island Department of Health is adding autism spectrum disorder to the list of conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana.  A petition that was received in April was signed yesterday, according to the health department.  Specifically, the department says the following symptoms qualify for use: repetition of self-stimulatory behavior and avoidance of others or inability to communicate with others to the point of severity that it jeopardizes physical health.  Before a physician can prescribe medical marijuana to a child, they must consult a child psychiatrist or pediatric neurologist, and other medications must first be considered.
