(Providence, RI) -- Rhode Island Secretary of Health and Human Services Eric Beane is leaving his post at the end of the year. Governor Gina Raimondo made that announcement on Friday, and said Lisa Vura-Weis, a deputy chief of staff in the governor's office, will become the acting secretary. The governor's office credited Beane with stabilizing the state's troubled public-benefits computer system, known as UHIP, and Beane said in his own statement that the state "turned a corner" on UHIP, strengthened DCYF and reduced overdose deaths, among other accomplishments since he was appointed in 2017. Raimondo resisted calls to fire Beane this past summer after a lawyer in the department reportedly missed a deadline to appeal a costly court decision.
