(North Smithfield, RI) -- The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is re-opening a historic bridge in North Smithfield. Officials gathered yesterday to celebrate at the Slatersville Stone Arch Bridge, which re-opened several months ahead of schedule. The structure is the oldest-documented masonry bridge in the state, dating back to 1855, and was deemed structurally-deficient in 2007, according to RIDOT. Remaining work will keep the bridge closed to pedestrians for some of this year.
