(Providence, RI) -- Governor Gina Raimondo has released her Fiscal Year 2020 budget, totaling nine-point-nine-billion dollars. The budget creates a state version of the Affordable Care Act in case something happens to the federal law. It includes a lengthy list of tax increases, with more items being included under the state sales tax, an increase in the hotel tax, and a higher tax for cigarettes and e-cigarettes. A modified version of a phase-out of the state's car tax is included. The budget allows the city of Providence to tax some non-profits that are currently tax-exempt such as colleges and hospitals.
