(Newport, RI) -- National Grid is targeting Saturday for beginning the next phase of restoration for natural gas service in Newport. At a press conference on Thursday night, the utility reported successfully shutting off gas meters for nearly everyone in the city. Every single gas meter must be shut off before the re-pressurization of the system can take place, followed by the re-lighting of gas appliances, according to officials. In Middletown, National Grid says the gas system was fully re-pressurized yesterday and that most of the 340 affected homes have been re-lit.
