(Newport, RI) -- National Grid says it has restored gas service to almost all customers who lost it on Aquidneck Island last week. Overnight Monday, the utility said the restoration rate in Newport was 95 percent. A huge drop in pressure forced National Grid to stop service last Monday, impacting thousands mostly in Newport and also in Middletown. National Grid then had to shut off all meters before it could re-pressurize the system and then re-light gas appliances.
