House Committee Passes Abortion Preservation Bill

(Providence, RI)--Rhode Island is one step closer to ensuring that abortion stays legal in the state, regardless of what happens at the federal level in the future.The House Judiciary Committee voted in favor of the Reproductive Privacy Act by a 9-to-7 margin on Tuesday, setting up a vote on the full House floor on Thursday.The Rhode Island Coalition for Reproductive Freedom, which supported the bill, noted that the last time there was a vote to codify Roe v. Wade was in 1993; relevant legislation was approved by the House that year, but not the Senate.Speaking of the Senate, its Judiciary Committee was still hearing testimony from pro-life and pro-choice voices regarding a companion piece of legislation as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, for a hearing that began last night.
