(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island House is approving a bill to protect the right to have an abortion.The Reproductive Privacy Act codifies privacy rights and reproductive freedoms guaranteed by the landmark Roe v. Wade case, expressly bans all late-term abortions except when necessary for the life and health of the mother, and confirms a federal ban on partial-birth abortion.The legislation passed 44-to-30 on Thursday night after hours of debate among House lawmakers, and after narrowly being approved by a committee earlier this week.It now heads to the Senate for consideration.
