A Michigan Republican is falling just short (as in, by a hair) of calling for the impeachment of President Trump. In a true tweetstorm, Michigan Republican Congressman Justin Amash says Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.
In doing so, Amash broke from his party in outlining four principal conclusions.
- First, he said "Attorney General Barr has deliberately misrepresented Mueller's report.”
- Second, he said specifically "President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct."
- His third conclusion? "Partisanship has eroded our system of checks and balances."
- And his last conclusion was, "Few members of Congress have read the report."
And while Amash doesn't explicitly call for Trump's impeachment, he is the first Republican in Congress to be open to the idea of impeachment on the record and to openly disagree with the rest of his party on the matter.
Not surprisingly, President Trump is firing back…via Twitter. Among other things, Trump says he was never a fan of Amash, calling him "a total lightweight who opposes me and some of our great Republican ideas and policies just for the sake of getting his name out there through controversy." As the President sees it, if Amash "actually read the biased Mueller Report, composed by 18 Angry Dems who hated me, he would see that it was nevertheless strong on NO COLLUSION and ultimately NO OBSTRUCTION." Trump adds Amash "is a loser who sadly plays right into our opponents hands!"
