A group of scientists has proposed a novel way to fight climate change in research published yesterday (May 20th), concluding that converting methane in the atmosphere into carbon dioxide could help slow down global warning, even though both are greenhouse gases that contribute to the planet's warming, according to the Los Angeles Times. Since methane traps much more heat than carbon dioxide, converting much of it in the atmosphere to carbon dioxide would eliminate one-sixth of global warming, according to the researchers, while adding only a few months' worth of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Although more research is needed to see if this plan would be realistic to do, the Times described the study's authors as "cautiously optimistic."
