Ellen Pompeo has revealed that she’s considered exiting ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” before. Sitting down for an interview with Taraji P Henson for Variety, the actress says she almost left because of the “toxic environment” on set.
The hit show is on its 15th season, and while there were “many moments” where Pompeo says she wanted “off the bus,” it was never the right time. “The first 10 years we had serious culture issues, very bad behavior,” she recalls. “But once I started having kids, it became no longer about me. I need to provide for my family.”
Eventually, right around season 10, it was time for some changes both on and off-camera to improve their experience. “Because we had so much turmoil for 10 years, my mission became, this can’t be fantastic to the public and a disaster behind the scenes,” she says. “Shonda Rhimes and I decided to rewrite the ending of this story. That’s what kept me.”
