Congressional Democrats are speaking out about the conditions at detention centers at the southern border. New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was among the members of the Hispanic Caucus who toured the center near El Paso, Texas, following reports that migrants at the facility are being kept in deplorable conditions. Among them? Detainees reportedly drinking out of toilets, and being denied medicine and even showers.
The delegation was met with both supporters and protesters during a news conference following their visit – and on social media. "This has been horrifying so far. It is hard to understate the enormity of the problem," Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter. "We're talking systemic cruelty (with) a dehumanizing culture that treats them like animals."
But AOC also spoke of not feeling safe in the facilities she toured – perhaps with very good reason. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is now investigating a Facebook group of more than nine-thousand current and former CBP officers who have been posting jokes about migrant deaths as well as sexist comments and sexually demeaning imagery about Ocasio-Cortez. Existence of the Facebook group was first reported by ProPublica.
