(Providence, RI)--The budget that has been moved to the full Providence City Council is cutting the salary of the vacant position of city fire chief. The Providence Fire Department hasn't had a permanent chief since July of 2015, and since then, the role has been occupied by Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare.Finance Committee chair John Igliozzi tells WPRI-TV that the council funded the position for four years, but the city has refused to hire somebody.Igliozzi said the council would be willing to add the funding if a chief is found.Meanwhile, the budget proposes cutting Pare's salary by about 40-thousand dollars, a move that was criticized by Mayor Jorge Elorza on Monday during a press conference at which he said he would veto the spending plan.
