California Congresswoman Katie Hill is resigning as an ethics probe against her is underway.
Hill, who was elected last year, said in a statement that it is with a broken heart that she announces her resignation from Congress. The House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into allegations Hill was involved romantically with a member of her staff. If true, it would violate House rules put in place during the #MeToo movement.
Hill, a Democrat, denied that allegation, but did admit to being involved with a member of her campaign staff. Hill said conservatives targeted her with help from her husband. The couple is going through divorce proceedings.
Hill represented the 25th Congressional District, which includes an area north of Los Angeles. She was considered a rising star in the party, having defeated Republican Steve Knight to flip the district. She was named vice chairman of the Oversight Committee, a high profile post for a freshman. Hill is openly bisexual.
