Report: Fishing Gear Is The Biggest Pollution Problem In The Ocean

The best way to stop ocean pollution may be to stop eating fish.

That’s because, a new report says dumped fishing gear is the biggest plastic polluter in the ocean. According to Greenpeace, over 640-thousand tons of nets, lines and traps used in commercial fishing are dumped and discarded in the sea every year.

“Ghost gear,” as it’s called is causing more and more marine animal deaths per year, including 300 sea turtles tangled in netting earlier this year.

The report is calling for global action to stop the plastic pollution and more accountability for the ghost gear, which is deadly to marine wildlife.
