A Marine veteran and U.S. citizen detained by ICE for three days is receiving a big check.
City commissioners in Grand Rapids, Michigan voted unanimously this week to payJilmar Ramos-Gomez190-thousand-dollars to settle a lawsuit. He was arrested last November after police say he started a small fire at a hospital and broke into the building's helipad. The incidents happened during a reported PTSD episode.
Despite having a driver's license and passport, Grand Rapids Police CaptainMark Vanderkooicontacted ICE to check Ramos-Gomez's immigration status and at one point called him "loco." Instead of releasing him from jail as a judge ordered, the police department handed him over to ICE.
Ramos-Gomez served in the Marines from 2011 to 2014 and suffers from PTSD which lead him to not remember where’s been.
