Netflix Under Fire For Racial & Gender Discrimination

Mo’Nique is making good on her threatto sue Netflix. She's accusing the streaming service of racial and gender discrimination because they tried to lowball her for a comedy special.

After offering the comedienne a $500-thousand dollars for an hour of stand-up in November 2017, the platform reportedly signed a $100-million dollar deal with Jerry Seinfeld for two specials and an interview series the same year. A year earlier, Dave Chappelle got a reported $60-million for three specials and Chris Rock got a two show-deal for $40-million. They even offered Amy Schumer $11-million – which she negotiated up to $13-million using Chappelle and Rock as leverage.

But that's not all. The Oscar winner says that Netflix has lacked diversity in its leadership and reportedly turned a blind eye or did not act quickly enough when both a senior executive and Kevin Spacey used racist language. She wants unspecified damages and an injunction forcing them to change its discriminatory policies.

  • For their part, Netflix is disputing the claims and has vowed to challenge Mo’Nique’s suit. “We care deeply about inclusion, equity, and diversity and take any accusations of discrimination very seriously,” a Netflix spokesperson offers. “We believe our opening offer to Mo'Nique was fair — which is why we will be fighting this lawsuit.” And for the record, the senior executive in question has been fired.
