President Trump may be objecting, but the U.S. Senate is voting to recognize Armenian genocide. The resolution recognizes the killing of one-and-a-half million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923.
The body passed the resolution by unanimous consent despite strong objections by the Trump Administration and Turkey. Turkey has lobbied Washington for years to not pass it. New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez moved for the adoption and no senator objected...and then broke down while describing the horrors of what happened.
"America's non-response to the Turkish horrors established patterns that would be repeated ... we know all too well the horrors that would be repeated later in the 20th century with the Holocaust and other genocides around the world," Menendez offered. "Here in the Senate today, we break those patterns. We join the House who voted to do so ... 405-11. Today the Senate shows the same resolve."
