(Providence, RI)--Rhode Island House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello is speaking out about a performance audit of the agency that runs the Rhode Island Convention Center. The state's auditor general said in a letter to the convention center authority that direction was given to perform the audit by the Joint Committee on Legislative Services. The timing has raised eyebrows because it coincides with a personnel matter that's ongoing involving former Rhode Island State Police Captain James Demers, who has been described as being friends with Mattiello, according to a report from WPRI-TV.Mattiello, in an interview with the news station, said the audit has nothing to do with their personal relationship, and that he has heard about potential problems at the Convention Center.
