Sunday Coronavirus Update: No New Cases Today

UPDATED: Sunday March 15 12:30pm

The number of coronavirus cases in Rhode Island stands at 20, as the state has not seen any new cases between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Governor Gina Raimondo announced that news in a midday press conference on Sunday. Despite the lack of new cases, the Governor reminded Rhode Islanders, “There will be more cases. This just a pause.” Raimondo says that approximately 100 people per day are being tested and that “What we are doing is working," because the state took "a robust response” in canceling classes and banning gatherings of 250 people or more.

The Governor has asked child care centers in the state to close and encouraged faith leaders to cancel services. "The way we get through it is to stick to these radical measures….Staying at home and social distancing.” Raimondo repeated her plea to “Stay Home...particularly if you have an underlying health issue or are over 60 years old." and to avoid crowds at all cost.  As schools in Rhode Island close for the upcoming week, she reminded students, "Don’t be congregating with your friends. Stay home."

If anyone is experiencing symptoms of coronavirus, they are encouraged to call the state's Coronavirus Hotline at 401-222-8022. Callers may be directed to a drive-through testing center. Raimondo would not reveal the location of such centers, saying that the Department of Health doesn't want people showing up for testing without first being directed to do so.

On Saturday, Twin River Casino announced that it was closing both its locations, Lincoln and Tiverton for one week. The City of Providence announced that all city-run buildings would be closed through March 30th.
