(Providence, RI)--The Rhode Island State Police is working with federal authorities to figure out who was behind the riots in Providence early Tuesday morning; officials allege it was an outside source. The riots began after protesters lined up opposite police outside the Providence Place mall and chants of "black lives matter" were heard, but soon after, up to one-hundred individuals broke free into the mall where they reportedly looted and vandalized stores before continuing a path of destruction in the downtown area.Governor Gina Raimondo on Tuesday claimed the instigators, quote, "came here to torch the State House", but that it didn't happen because police were prepared.
