(Pawtucket, RI)--An online petition is circulating to save the job of a Pawtucket teacher who is charged with vandalizing the Christopher Columbus statue in Providence.Derrick Garforth, a history teacher at Jenks Middle School, was placed on leave following the weekend incident.The petition, which had over six-thousand signatures Tuesday night, was started by a parent of one of Garforth's students; he says the Pawtucket School Department should not fire Garforth, and that the statue should have been removed long ago.Last year the statue was vandalized on Columbus Day with red paint, along with a sign that was attached that said "Stop Celebrating Genocide".
