(Providence, RI) -- It sounds like the Rhode Island State Police will be providing assistance to the Providence Police Department to address a crime wave. Providence City Council president John Igliozzi bypassed Mayor Jorge Elorza this week and directly asked Governor Dan McKee for the help. Igliozzi said the PPD is stretched thin with only four-hundred officers, down about a hundred from when the city successfully implemented community policing which he said was effective against violent crime in the 2000s. According to a report from WLNE-TV, Elorza said Thursday that the city is pursuing a partnership which enhances the police department's ability to prevent gun violence and investigate violent crime.
