Columbus Statue Debate In Providence

The Providence Board of Parks Commissioners met Monday to discuss the issue of the city's Christopher Columbus statue.

The historic statue, which was created by the same sculptor who designed the Statue of Liberty, was taken down from its perch on Elmwood Avenue in June of 2020 after repeated vandalism incidents and placed in storage.

Commissioners agreed yesterday that the statue should not go back to its original spot and discussed potentially selling it.

Some commissioners have then suggested using the money to reinvest in the city.

No final decision was made, and the issue will be revisited next year.
