The United States Coast Guard responded to a person in the water in Narragansett Bay on Monday night.
The Bristol fire chief says a woman fell overboard from the Prudence Island Ferry at around 6 p.m.
The woman was not immediately located.
The Coast Guard has resumed the search for the woman described as being in her 30's or 40's and who was not wearing a life vest.
