Republicans Propose State Suspension Of Gas Tax

Rhode Island State Senator Jessica de la Cruz says she was out and about on Sunday when a couple stopped her to express support for a measure that would suspend the state gas tax for the rest of the year as a way to give drivers a cheaper ride as gas prices continue to soar.

Currently gas taxes in the state amount to 35 cents a gallon.

The Senator says that drivers are paying a buck more a gallon than they were last year at this time and it is taking a toll on young families, low income residents and the elderly who are just trying to live their lives.

Senator de la Cruz says that residents need help now and this is one way to do it. She is calling for immediate passage.

In addition to the state tax proposal, Connecticut Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has a proposal that would suspend the federal gas tax for the rest of the year. He made that proposal public this week.

It is unclear when lawmakers will take up the issue. It has just been referred to committee.

So far -Governor McKee hasn't commented.
