Lifespan and Care New England are withdrawing from a proposed merger after it was rejected by the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office and the Federal Trade Commission.
The state's two largest healthcare systems said on Wednesday they will not seek a certificate of public advantage from the General Assembly which would have pushed the merger through despite antitrust concerns.
Soon after the announcement yesterday, a company which previously made an unsolicited bid for Care New England, StoneBridge Healthcare in Pennsylvania, made a second offer.
So far, there has been no comment from either side about that offer.
