The House is passing a series of bills restricting access to guns and ammo. The "Protecting Our Kids Act" passed Wednesday in a 223-204 vote, with things now moving to the Senate. Measures passed include raising the minimum age to buy semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21, as well as a ban on large-capacity magazines and tougher penalties for trafficking firearms.
Congressman David Cicciline told colleagues:
"Gun violence is the crisis of this generation. There isn’t a person or community in this country that isn't affected by gun violence. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, in a city or a suburb, young or old. We are all a text message away from this happening to anyone of us," the congressman said.
Despite the passage in the House- the measure is not expected to see the light of day in the Senate with negotiators looking to make a narrower measure designed to win enough support to survive a GOP filibuster.
