RI Senate To Tackle Gun Issues As DC Lawmakers Continue March To Vote

Gun control legislation is advancing in Rhode Island while action on the issue is being taken in the background in Washington, DC.

The RI House of Representatives approved three bills on Friday.

One of the bills bans large-capacity gun magazines, limiting the ammunition to ten rounds.

Attempts to grandfather in existing owners were voted down, with Attorney General Peter Neronha warning lawmakers that any such clause would make the law unenforceable.

The House also approved raising the age to purchase all types of firearms, not just handguns, to 21.

The third bill would ban the open carrying of loaded shotguns and rifles.

All three measures have been moved to the state Senate for a committee review on Tuesday.

The Governor has already said he will sign the measures if they pass the legislature this week.
