Georgia Man Sentenced In RI Bank Scheme

A federal prison sentence is being handed down for a bank fraud scheme that exploited homeless people living in the Providence area.

The Justice Department says Jalen Stanford of Riverdale, Georgia will serve two years behind bars.

According to Prosecutor Lee Vilker the investigation uncovered "approximately $677,687 worth of counterfeit checks that were presented to banks throughout the four states, causing actual losses to financial institutions of nearly $481,000."

According to the DOJ, Stanford solicited, transported and paid individuals to cash hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of counterfeit business checks throughout New England.
