The Woonsocket City Council voted late Wednesday night to remove Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt by a 3-to-2 vote.
Councilor Denise Sierra filed a complaint that accused Baldelli-Hunt of ignoring measures passed by the council and willful violation of the city charter.
Sierra abstained from last night's vote, as did Daniel Gendron, the city council president who was sworn in as acting mayor.
The now former mayor met with reporters immediately after the vote.
She called the council action "UN-American."
Baldelli-Hunt said that she would be working everyday between now and November 8th and will be asking "every single resident to take note of what happened". She asked voters to work with her to "remove the obstructionists" that are standing in the way of progress in the community of more than 41 thousand people.
Baldelli-Hunt, is expected to make a return to office soon, as she is running unopposed for mayor in the general election.
