Springfield-based Merriam Webster dictionary says "gaslighting" is the word of the year.
It defines it as "the act of grossly misleading someone especially for one's own advantage."
According to a statement from the company, "Unlike lying, which tends to be between individuals, and fraud, which tends to involve organizations, gaslighting applies in both personal and political contexts. "
Merriam Webster says in the age of misinformation, conspiracy theories, Twitter trolls and deepfakes, gaslighting has emerged as the word of our times.
