Providence City Councilman John Goncalves says he is running for the First District Congressional seat that David Cicilline is retiring from later this year.
He becomes the sixth candidate to throw his hat in the ring.
The two term city councilman says he "sees the world through the eyes of the most vulnerable people of Rhode Island because I have lived it."
Goncalves says that as a working-class Rhode Islander he will fight to improve education and work toward solving gun violence.
He says he will work for good paying jobs, support veterans and seniors as well as protect reproductive rights.
He says the state needs bold solutions and ideas that put the people of the state first.
