DOJ Reaches Settlement With Local Skilled Nursing Center

The Justice Department says a settlement has been reached with a Providence skilled nursing center for alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Elmhurst Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center was accused of failing to furnish sign language interpreting services for a resident who is deaf.

“When deaf Rhode Islanders seek medical care, they shouldn’t have to worry whether a lack of legally required interpreter services will keep them from communicating effectively with their healthcare providers,” remarked U.S. Attorney Zachery Cunha. “Today’s settlement ensures that those services will be provided, as the law requires, for all patients.”

Under the settlement agreement, Elmhurst will adopt new policies and practices.

They will also pay a 30-thousand-dollar settlement to the complainant and a five-thousand-dollar civil penalty.
