Local Man Avoids Jail In Capitol Riot

A Rhode Island man is avoiding prison time for participating in the U.S. Capitol riot.

William Cotton of Hopkinton was allegedly spotted in a large crowd that trespassed in the Senate Wing.

The January 6th, 2021 riot delayed the Congressional certification of the election of Joe Biden as the president.

Cotton pleaded guilty to one count of "parading, demonstrating and picketing in a Capitol building" and was sentenced to nine months of probation.

He was also ordered to pay a five-hundred-dollar fine.

Cotton took responsibility in a letter to a judge, and said he felt sick seeing himself on video.
