State Lawmakers Seek Crackdown On Fatal Crashes

State lawmakers have introduced legislation that would stiffen the penalties for those found guilty of drunk and impaired driving.

Among the proposals would be the extension of Rhode Island's "look back" period from five to ten years; another would raise fines and sentences for drivers involved in a crash with injuries or fatalities.

RIDOT estimates more than three thousand arrests annually involve impaired drivers.

Legislators say more than a dozen DUI-related proposals will be taken up during this year's session.
