State lawmakers are considering changing the name of a holiday that is celebrated only in Rhode Island.
Victory Day was established in 1948 as a state holiday and is celebrated on the second Monday in August.
It commemorates the end of the Second World War and honors the approximately 92-thousand Rhode Islanders who served and the nearly 22-hundred who died.
Representative Jennifer Stewart's legislation would change the name to "Peace and Remembrance Day," which she says would ensure that millions of civilians who were killed during the war would also be remembered.
Previous efforts to change the holiday's name have failed.
