Stranded Whale In Wakefield Monitored

Officials with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and Mystic Aquarium are monitoring a whale stranded in Wakefield.

Believed to be a juvenile Fin Whale, it ended up in Succotash Marsh, possibly during high tide.

The whale is about 30 to 40 feet in length and likely weighs around 12 tons. Marine biologists say the whale is in poor condition and emaciated, but still alive.

There is no evidence of a vessel strike or entanglement in fishing gear, which are common injuries.

The Fin Whale is the second-largest species on Earth, second only to the Blue Whale.

DEM is asking residents and the curious to steer clear of the marsh.
