Authorities have announced the arrest of a man in East Providence last month.
The 45-year-old Nigerian national was taken into custody in the Rumford section of the city on February 15th.
He had entered the U.S. by way of New York City on a non-immigrant tourist visa in May 2017 and stayed beyond the authorized time.
Rhode Island state police arrested him in July 2019 on a charge of indecent solicitation of a child. He was not convicted until May 2022.
The arrest is part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's national effort to take into custody unlawfully present sex offenders.
