Bill Would Make More Transparent School Closing Efforts

A House bill that would forestall sudden closures or mergers of schools in Rhode Island is being considered.

The measure calls for a public and transparent process requiring districts under the state Department of Education to explain the reasons for such actions and must involve the public.

The bill comes after the plan to close 360 High School in Providence earlier this year and merge it with Juanita Sanchez High.

Students, teachers, and community members have pushed back against the closure.

The bill is being held for further study.
