Spotted Lanternfly Expands Reach Across State

Rhode Island's Spotted Lanternfly population is increasing.

The invasive species first appeared in the state in August of 2021, and have spread across the state.

The lanternfly is a destructive species and targets certain trees along with plants and fruit crops.

The state Department of Environmental Management says the species often spread through egg masses, which attach to trees but can be found on man-made objects, including motor vehicles.

DEM is working to train residents on identifying and reporting the masses.

When found they should be reported, but also destroyed by smashing them.
