Minimum Wage For Tip Workers Goes To Study Committee

The House Judiciary Committee took testimony on legislation that would end Rhode Island's tipped minimum wage.

Representative Karen Alzate's bill would gradually increase the tipped worker's base wage from three-dollars-89-cents per hour to 15 dollars by 2030.

Supporters say the tipped wage is outdated and even discriminatory.

Servers and bartenders spoke out against the measure, saying such a law would cost them tips, while restaurant owners warned it would force them to raise prices to accommodate the wage hike.

The bill has been held in committee for further study.
