Fed, Pawtucket Settle Voting Rights Suit

The Rhode Island U.S. Attorney's Office and the Department of Justice have entered an agreement to settle a voting rights lawsuit against the City of Pawtucket.

The lawsuit alleged that Pawtucket failed to provide election assistance and materials in Spanish, for Spanish-speaking voters with limited English proficiency.

It also claimed that election officials did not allow qualified voters to cast provisional ballots and failed to train poll workers on the requirements.

Under the agreement, the city and Board of Canvassers must provide election-related information in English and Spanish.

In addition, there must be in-person language assistance in each precinct with at least 100 registered voters with Spanish-surnames.
