The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Department of Health say June 10th mosquito samples from Tiverton and Coventry tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.
Although EEE is extremely rare in humans, it can be deadly. It's estimated that around 30-percent of people with the virus die and many survivors suffer neurological problems.
Rhode Islanders should protect themselves from mosquitoes by using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin or clothing.
Standing water should be eliminated and window screens should be secured.
