The state's Department of Health has issued a warning after a Rhode Islander died from a Vibrio bacteria infection this month.
Officials say beachgoers with open wounds should avoid brackish sand salt water because they may be exposed to Vibrio.
Open wounds can include recent cuts, scrapes, surgery sites and recent piercings or tattoos. RIDOH says while vibriosis is rare, it can be extremely dangerous for people with weakened immune systems or underlying medical conditions.
In severe cases, wounds infected with Vibrio can be life-threatening.
