The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the Rhode Island Department of Education and the Providence Public School District over the Educators of Color Loan Forgiveness program.
The Department of Justice lawsuit says under the program, educators who identify as teachers of color can receive up to 25 thousand dollars in student loan forgiveness while only white teachers are excluded.
The complaint asks the court to declare that the program discriminates on the basis of race, and they are requesting a permanent injunction against RIDE and PPSD to stop them from implementing the program or any others that are race-based.
In addition, the plaintiffs want to award equitable relief to teachers who were not eligible for the program because of their race.
